DynamicsCon is a great opportunity for users to gain valuable insights into the functionalities and practical examples of Microsoft Dynamics 365 and the Power Platform. The trade fair is organized by the Dynamics User Group and is a great platform for learning and exchange. Numerous Microsoft specialists are there to share the latest developments with the community. This year's DynamicsCon took place in Chicago in May and Sven Mahn IT was represented by three consultants.
In the sessions, individual processes were clearly demonstrated and the setting options presented - for example, the possibilities of shipment consolidation or production flow execution. The introduction of agents, which are currently in the preview phase, and the various Copilot integrations continue to attract particular interest. We also looked at how existing topics have evolved and which innovations are currently in the pipeline, such as the promising Traceability App.
The keynote presentation dealt with the topics of "Autonomous ERP" and "Agents", highlighting the different stages of AI transformation. These range from simple, manually controlled agents to highly developed, autonomous systems that are still under human supervision.
The new start page - "New Immersive Home Experience" - was presented in individual sessions, where specific suggestions from agents can be integrated to support everyday tasks. These suggestions can not only be prioritized, for example according to work elements and processes, but can also be supplemented by a clear summary of agent activities.
The range of agents is divided into three categories based on their complexity and capabilities:
- "Retrieval" - agents that act purely informatively
- "Task" - agents that carry out specific actions on instruction
- "Autonomous" - agents that can operate independently
Another focus is on the development of agent tools for programming. This ranges from "no code" solutions for end users to "pro code" approaches for developers. Three options will be presented: the "Agent Builder" for end users, "Copilot Studio" for so-called makers and "Copilot Studio + Azure AI" for developers.
The agents currently in preview include the Supplier Communication Agent for Supply Chain Management, the Account Reconciliation Agent for Finance, an Agent for Field Service and three further agents for Project Operations.
Further impulses from the sessions:
Process mining:
Process Mining is a powerful tool for analyzing and optimizing business processes based on real transaction data. The method visualizes actual processes, uncovers deviations and bottlenecks and thus helps to optimize processes in a targeted manner. Through integration with tools such as Power BI and Power Automate, data-based decisions can be made directly from the ERP system. Power Automate process mining can be integrated with Dynamics 365. One example is "Warehouse Material Movement Analysis", which can be used to visualize material flows in the warehouse, for example. This helps to identify inefficiencies and improve warehouse performance.
DDMRP (Demand Driven Material Requirements Planning):
DDMRP is a modern planning method that decouples material flows through strategically placed buffers and thus reacts to fluctuations in demand. In Dynamics 365 Finance and Supply Chain Management, DDMRP is fully integrated into master planning and uses dynamic buffer adjustments to optimize material availability. This reduces bottlenecks and makes the supply chain more resilient.
The Demand Panning app is also worth mentioning in this context. Demand forecasting predicts future requirements based on historical data and thus supports forward-looking planning. The app enables simple configuration without programming knowledge, supports what-if scenarios and allows forecasts to be controlled at different levels of detail. Close integration with Supply Chain Management and Microsoft Teams enables collaborative, transparent and traceable planning.
Traceability App:
The new traceability app in Dynamics 365 Finance and Supply Chain Management enables seamless traceability of products across serial or batch numbers - both backwards to origin and forwards to use. It visualizes the entire component link and shows all associated activities such as goods receipt, consumption or production steps.
The app is a Power App and requires the Traceability Add-in for Dynamics 365 SCM. There is still potential for optimization in terms of performance and the recording of traceability information, as the assignment currently has to be done manually. The app is still in the preview phase, which means that some functions are not yet fully developed or available.
Conclusion
In addition to the technical focus, the community was a big part of DynamicsCon for me. There were many opportunities for exchange and networking. The atmosphere was incredibly open and engaged - especially through the exchange of knowledge during or after the sessions.
I was able to gain exciting new insights into topics such as process mining, DDMRP, demand planning and the new traceability app. Not only were the advantages of these solutions highlighted, but also the challenges that still exist. Compared to Microsoft Ignite, which was heavily focused on visions around AI and the future of technology, DynamicsCon for me was closer to what is available and usable today. The sessions were practical and full of helpful impulses for everyday work, making them very user-oriented. I am now looking forward to incorporating the impetus gained into our projects - with the aim of creating real added value for our customers.
DynamicsCon was a real highlight for me. Those who attended were able to experience how supportive the community is. And if you weren't there yet: it's definitely worth it!
